Mitch’s Mobile BBQ success came about by accident. What commenced as an idea to make the best ice cream he could transformed into a BBQ and Ice Cream place. Beginning on August 1st, 1992 after remodeling a small storefront, he began serving his ice cream. In July 1993, he went to the 3 Rivers Rib & Music Festival where he tasted his first Texas-style brisket. He was hooked on the idea of marrying BBQ & ice cream.
A few weeks later his trek into the world of BBQ began right in front of a former gas station he remodeled a year earlier using 55-gallon drums he had purchased in the Hill District of Pittsburgh. One year later he purchased a wood fired BBQ Pit from the rib vendor, Dallas Green, who he met at the rib cook-off in 1993. In Jul of 94′ he won best sauce at the same 3 Rivers Rib Cook-off. He garnered press in the Post Gazette of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Magazine.
One year later, a couple inquired about catering a birthday party at their residence, which began his long line of catering services. A year later he ended up on the premiere of the ice cream show with Rick Sebak, producer and narrator of many Pittsburgh themed documentaries. In 1997, he purchased his first box truck to go mobile with a wood-fired BBQ pit. In 98′ he moved to Hampton TWP, where he sold ice cream and continued catering. That’s when his catering business really took over.
So 26+ years later, a man went from no prior food experience to be good at BBQ and food. He now has a restaurant along with his mobile catering company so you can get great BBQ at any time.
